Urethane Conformal CoatingĀ Services

printed circuit boards PCBs

Polyurethane coatings are amongst one of the most popular choices for conformal coating applications. They are available as single-component, two-component, UV curable, and waterborne systems. A polyurethane coating is one of the best options for protecting sensitive components in electronic devices. As a urethane coating services company, Diamond MT can apply coatings and follow your specific application's best practices.

Properties of Urethane Conformal Coating

Urethane coating is tough and rigid, with many attributes:

  • Solvent- and abrasion-resistant: Urethane coating is thick enough to repel chemical solvents and defend against physical abrasions.
  • Moisture- and oil-resistant: Urethane conformal coating can also resist oil and moisture that would otherwise harm the components.
  • Class F temperature rating: Urethane coatings meet the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) requirements for Class F insulation, which is 160 degrees Celsius or 320 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Flexible: This coating has good flexibility at low temperatures, which is ideal for manipulating the coating.
  • Thin: Urethane conformal coating can be thinned down until it is a particular viscosity.
  • Fungicidal: This coating can repel and eliminate fungi to prevent mold growth and component damage.

Urethane Conformal Coating Process

Polyurethane coatings are applied with one of three liquid deposition techniques:

  • Dip: An arm holds the device and lowers it into a dip tank with the urethane coating. This technique provides excellent penetration and a fast processing time. Dipping can be manual or automated.
  • Spray: Using a spray gun or aerosol can, the coating is sprayed onto the device. This efficient process can complete thousands of applications in quick succession for a fast turnaround on your order.
  • Brush: With this technique, the operator brushes the coating onto the device. Brushing is common for low volume orders and often comes at a decreased cost.

The final step for urethane coatings is curing. Single-component urethane coatings are easy to apply but have a trade-off of a long cure cycle up to several days. Two-component urethane coatings have a shorter cure cycle of one to three days but are more difficult to apply.

Urethane Coating Benefits

It is beneficial to use a urethane coating on your devices because it has:

  • Good dielectric properties.Urethane will insulate the device from static discharge and electrical malfunctions and prevent overheating.
  • Good moisture resistance. Urethane can repel humidity and moisture.
  • Solvent resistance. Urethane coatings are superior to other options at protecting against organic solvents.
  • Less reversion potential. Compared to other coatings, urethane is less likely to revert.
  • Abrasion resistance. This coating resists abrasions well because it is sturdy.
  • Good adhesion. Urethane conformal coating has excellent adhesion in all climatic conditions.

Standards and Inspections for Urethane Coating

The most common standards for conformal coating are IPC A-610 and IPC-CC-830. These standards list indications of good and bad coverage and describe various failure mechanisms, such as de-wetting and orange peel.

Conformal coating inspection is a critical factor in determining successful coating application and long term reliability of printed circuit boards (PCBs). Using the IPC standards allows the coating operator to monitor the coating application performance. This can be done manually by the operator in an inspection booth by examining the PCB under white and UVA light. It can also be done automatically by a conformal coating inspection system.

Acrylic Resin Coating Applications

Applications and Industries for Urethane Conformal Coating

A main reason conformal coatings are used is to extend the warranties on consumer electronics for safety features and long-term reliability in the automotive, control drives, fire alarms and military and aerospace fields. This coating protects electronics from airborne environmental threats such as temperature variations, salt sprays, moisture and chemicals.

As a group, all urethane coating systems provide excellent humidity and chemical resistance plus outstanding dielectric properties for extended periods, which makes them one of the more popular coatings when it comes to protecting the critical operation of your PCBs. Conformal coating circuit boards reduce conductor spacings on PCBs, offer superior protection in an aggressive environment and protect the PCB against environmental particulates.

Urethane conformal coating is also used to insulate electronic assemblies and units, such as transformers, generators, relays and motors.

Urethane Coating Services at Diamond MT

The selection of conformal coating material is a crucial factor that needs to be considered carefully and in relation to the application method. The wrong selection can affect the long-term reliability of the circuit board and cause massive difficulties with both processing and costs.

Diamond MT is a urethane coating provider that provides quality coatings for electronic devices and more. We have perfected our urethane coating process to produce repeatable results for consistency across your order.

Diamond MT can also perform urethane coating removal services. The removal process can be difficult because urethane coating resists solvents. If your device has a single-component coating, we will burn through for spot repair and use specially formulated strippers for removing the entire coating.

Why Choose Diamond MT as Your Urethane Coating Company?

Diamond MT has been a urethane coating company since 2006 and uses International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001:2015 and Aerospace Standard (AS) 9100D certified facilities for all coating application, reworking and removal services.
